While my sister sleeps by Barbara Delinsky

Publication Date: January 1st 2009
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Grief
My Goodreads Rating: 5/5
Source: Own Copy

I just finished reading "While my Sister Sleeps" by Barbara Delinsky. It was a phenomenal story, sprinkled with emotion and dressed with a simplistic style. I really enjoyed the story, in fact I finished it in a day!
Molly is a young woman working in the family business. The Snow's run a flower and plant store atop "Snow Hill", and Molly retreats to the greenhouse quite often and shares a cottage with her elder sister, Robin, who's on her way to the Olympic Track Team.

Unfortunately, Robin gets into an accident, and from there on story revolves around the family's bottled secrets and emotions. Their overbearing mother is devastated, it was she who pushed Robin to run. The cool, collected father is the pillar supporting the family, while the younger brother is facing problems of his own with his wife and child. Molly bears the brunt of her mother's hate, as she always does, but she realizes in time, that nothing could have been done to prevent Robin's accident.

As family secrets are unearthed, and fears are faced, this story of love, passion and discovery grips the reader till the very end. I loved Delinsky's simplistic writing. I'm certain that this is one of the only Adult books I've read, with such simple writing. Each line packs a punch, and each page reveals something new.

I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone out there. The writing makes it easy for children to read, but doesn't take away any of the interest for adults. Each of the characters in the story are dynamic, and Delinsky does a marvelous job of directing the reader's attention to smaller details in the plot.

If you haven't yet- Go read this book! It really is amazing- and trust me, you'll love it!

The Hero, by Rabindranath Tagore

The narrative poem" The Hero" was written by Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. Set in a young boy's imaginations this narrative has all the necessary elements and is rich in imagery. The characters, plot, setting, theme, climax and idea are all very clearly outlined.  The setting of the poem falls within the boy's imagination. It is described to have 'spiky grass' and a 'narrow broken path'. It is also mentioned that the country is 'strange and dangerous'. The rurality of the setting is further accentuated when Tagore talks of the 'cattle' and 'wide fields'.

One by Shawnee Kellie

The poem "One" by Shawnee Kellie is a very interesting and thought-provoking piece of writing. The poem spreads the message that it is not only a large group of people that can make a change, but one idea, one thought, one human that can help make the world a better place.

Coromandel Fishers by Sarojini Naidu

Hello! For this post I will be exploring another poem written by Sarojini Naidu, called "Coromandel Fishers". This poem can be taken as an allegory, for although it speaks to fishermen, it's metaphoric value speaks to the nation, and can be considered a wakening call for the people of our country. When I wrote about "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad", I mentioned that Sarojini Naidu was one of our freedom fighters, and believed greatly in the Swadeshi movement. Naidu reflects her passion for India in this poem.
