Smoke and Ashes: The Story of the Holocaust by Barbara Rogasky

I recently picked up "Smoke and Ashes: The Story of the Holocaust" by Barbara Rogasky from my school library. We'd been studying about WWII in History and I picked up the book for further information. I'm so glad I did, as I found out so many things I'd never have known otherwise, including various horrendously overlooked elements of the Holocaust.  I read the second edition of this historical book, which had a revised format and more information. What struck me most about this was the dedication at the beginning, to Rogasky's fifty family members who'd been killed during the Holocaust in the U.S.S.R.

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

Publication Date: July 31st 2012 Genre: Realistic Fiction ( in a historical setting) My Goodreads Rating: 4/5 Source:  Own Copy Hey everyone! I'm back with a book review. I was supposed to upload this one sometime last week, but I completely forgot about it...whoops! Anyway, today I'll be reviewing M.L. Stedman's "The Light Between Oceans ".  This book was the Goodreads' Choice Winner for 2012, so when my mom recommended it to me, I decided to give it a go. Admittedly, I was a little hesitant at first, because for some reason the story didn't sound very interesting to me at the time. Once I got into it though, I was really happy with my choice.    Tom Sherbourne served in the Australian/British forces in the first war, and after four years on the fronts, he's come back to serve in the lifeguard committe. He's sent to Janus Rock, a quiet island almost a day away from the coast. Not too long into the story, he marries Isabel, a bold, carin...

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Publication Date: May 6th 2014 Genre: Historical Fiction My Goodreads Rating: 5/5 Source:  Borrowed Hello Everyone! I'm back with a book review after a long time- but I promise this one was worth waiting for. I'll be reviewing Anthony Doerr's "All the Light We Cannot See" today, and trust me, just as soon as you read the book you'll understand why I love it so much.  Doerr's novel, set in the Second World War, revolves around the life of a blind French girl and an orphaned German Boy. Flitting through years and countries, Anthony Doerr depicts marvelously the struggles of life during a war, no matter which character he is writing about.

Annexed by Sharon Dogar

Publication Date: 2005 Genre: Historical Fiction My Goodreads Rating: 4/5 Source: Library Copy Hey everyone! I felt the need to upload a book review again- after quite a while- because this week I read a book that really inspired me. Annexed, by Sharon Dogar. This is the fictional story of Peter Van Pels ( a real person) who was hiding in the Annex, with Anne Frank and her family. In Anne's Diary, he is represented as Peter Van Daan.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

I recently finished the book, Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. I don't usually do book reviews or recommendations, but this book was begging for one. The story is so sweet and unusual, and the characters are so vivid that I couldn't help myself. Publication Date: June 12th 2007 Genre: Historical Fiction My Goodreads Rating: 4/5 Source:  Own Copy   Sarah's Key consists of the stories of two characters. It moves between the narration of both characters until eventually one of the stories ends, and blends into the other. I found this quite unique. Although there are many writers who allow more than one character to be first person in a book, not a lot of them switch between milieus.    Tatiana de Rosnay switches between the story of a young Jew in occupied France and an American Journalist in modern day Paris. Although the Jew was born much before the American, the story allows them to share a bond.
