This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills is the tale of a young girl from New York (Sloane) who moves to Florida and finds herself in a great friendship with twins; Vera is a social-media star with an incredibly bright personality and Gabe a serious and profound boy.
Vera and Gabe's father has recently remarried, and the twins are struggling to accept the loss of their mother. When one of her beloved paintings goes missing, the twins are absolutely crushed. Feeling a fierce sense of protectiveness for her friends, Sloane takes it upon herself to track down the missing painting and secure her friendship with Vera and Gabe.
Sloane is the absolute opposite of Vera. She is definitely not a social butterfly, nor does she spend her time on social media. Sloane has always been reserved, with a very limited circle of friends, but once she and Vera cement their friendship, she is introduced to a wide cast of characters.
As Sloane experiences the Florida High-School life of partying, studying, sleeping-over and dating, she finds herself fitting in well with this new group of friends. When Vera and Gabe deal with the loss of their mother, she tries her best to help them. She goes as far as tracking down a missing painting that their mother painted for them.
The novel mainly revolves around the tracking down of the painting, but also emphasizes on the way she conceals it from Vera and Gabe, how she falls for certain people, the disruption of a family (both Sloane's and Vera & Gabe's), and friendships that turn into relationships.
Emma Mills writes as though she is the character, which can often be hard to do. She writes as a teenager, and as a struggling girl, rather than as an author characterizing a teenager. While she writes as Sloane, she incorporates small details in the background that we often consider white-noise that adds so much to the novel.
Another thing that immediately stands out about this book is the cover. We're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, I know, I know.... but when the cover is this beautiful, you just can't help it! I first came across this book through a meme where people picked their favourite covers and listed them. I'm so glad that I did, because I absolutely enjoyed this novel!
I think you should pick up this novel even if you're not a huge fan of YA Contemporary books. It has very genuine characters that play against almost every cliche there is! If you were a fan of Kristin Hannah's Night Road, you should definitely try out this book as well!
